Japanese Cultural Society of Maui President Keith Regan unveiled the organization’s new logo to the members at its general membership meeting on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 following a logo contest that was open to all Maui residents.

Submitted by a graphics designer who wished to remain anonymous and who requested that the contest’s cash prize of $250 be donated back to the club, the logo, as explained by Regan, is in the shape a fan which is symbolic of the Japanese culture. The opened red fan symbolizes the Japanese cultural club’s openness, desire to grow, and its ability to outreach to the general public. Bamboo symbolizes the club’s strength, longevity and flexibility.

The members, who cast their ballots at the recent Shinnen Enkai on January 26, also selected the kanji “wa” to be incorporated in the selected logo. “Wa” means harmony, peace, and the Japanese style. Harmony is a valued and integral part of the Japanese culture. This is evident in how the club conducts itself in working together which also promotes friendship and fellowship. “Working harmoniously as a group enables the club to move forward and make great contributions to the community,” said Japanese Cultural Society of Maui Director Suzie Nakata.
