The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will be holding its annual clean up at the Japanese Gardens at the Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens in Iao Valley on Saturday, March 19, at 9 a.m.
President Tiffany Iida said, “This is a way to show our appreciation and to pay tribute to our ancestors.” Families are encouraged to attend to view the many monuments at the park and share the stories of the Japanese immigration with their children. Members and the general public are encouraged to attend according to event chair Rodney Ryugo.
Those attending are asked to bring garden tools, trash bags, and portable chairs. A bento lunch, available for $7, will be served at 11:30 a.m. To purchase a bento, contact Priscilla Yamamura at 283-4253 by March 16. Water will be available. |

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui (JCS Maui) will welcome the Year of the Rabbit at its annual Shinnen Enkai (New Year) dinner on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the elleair Rainbow Room at the Maui Beach Hotel. The Shinnen Enkai will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the traditional otoso (sake welcome) with no-host cocktail hour to follow. Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Cost for the buffet dinner is $45, $20 for children ages 6-10, and free for children ages 5 and under. JCSM dues paying members will receive a $5 cash rebate on the evening of the event. Tickets are available through the Maui Box Shop and Credit Associates in Wailuku Party Paradise in the Maui Mall, Sanrio at Queen Kaahumanu Center, and Omochaya in Pukalani.

To assist the general public in preparing for the upcoming obon festivals, the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui (JCSM) will sponsor a yukata (summer kimono) dressing workshop on Saturday, May 1, at 5 p.m. at Kahului Hongwanji social hall. The tuition is $10 per person.
“Many want to dress up in their yukata but don’t know how to go about doing so. This workshop is an opportunity to learn how to dress yourself in a summer kimono and to tie an obi,” said JCSM President Tiffany Iida.
A potluck dinner and obon dance practice will follow the workshop.
To register for this workshop which will be taught by Ken Tasaka, call Renee or Lynn at 244-6042. Those interested in attending the workshop are asked to bring their own yukata, obi and other accessories. |

A kimono fashion show and a special performance by Uluwehi Guerrero will be the highlight of the Maui Matsuri kickoff event on Friday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

The kickoff event, sponsored by Araki-Regan & Associates LLC, will also include a cosplay exhibition, children’s crafts, taiko and koto performances, and Japanese dancing by Matsudai Ryu and Nakayama Minyo Kai. The event will conclude with obon odori practice around the center stage at approximately 8 p.m.
The purpose of the free event is to bring more public awareness about the upcoming 10th Annual Maui Matsuri on May 14-15.
