In 1969, the decline in traditional Japanese values, culture and heritage sparked a group of Nisei women to form the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui to perpetuate their heritage and help educate the sansei and yonsei generations. On May 27th, 1969, Mrs. Edith Izumi was installed as the President of the newly formed organization. The objectives of the organization were developed and continue to be the mission of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui. They are:

  • To promote and encourage the preservation and perpetuation of the Japanese culture in Hawaii;
  • To work for the common good and general welfare;
  • To promote and cultivate good fellowship among the members; and
  • To participate in activities which would enhance and enrich the life of the community.
